WHY WE MAKE PYJAMAS.

WE BELIEVE IN HAVING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE PLANET.

OUR MISSION.

HERMIT IS BUILT ON THE DISCOVERY THAT 10 MILLION TONNES OF BED LINEN IS THROWN AWAY EVERY YEAR IN EUROPE ALONE.

We strive for a simple exchange.

We take high quality bed linen, destined for landfill beyond all sense, and transform it into individual, characterful and comfortable pyjamas for a good night’s sleep with one less environmental worry on your mind.

That’s all. No more, no less.

WHY WE MAKE PYJAMAS?

Founder Ella Campion, works as a London based textile designer and pits her everyday against the global fabric waste crisis.

BY 2030, WE ARE EXPECTED TO BE DISCARDING MORE THAN 134 MILLION TONNES OF TEXTILES A YEAR.

We all know this is an enormous problem, and sadly, when faced with enormous problems inaction is all too often the consequence. Striving towards closing the loop will take time and perseverance, but in the meantime we want to do all we can to help.

This is why Hermit was born, to make the fight against fabric waste more accessible.

Focus. That’s what it comes down to. We’ve focussed Hermit on the discovery that 10 million tonnes of luxury hotel bed linen is thrown away every year in Europe alone. To give this context, it takes 2,700 litres of water, approximately 900 days of drinking water, to create 1 cotton t-shirt.

Imagining how we could save this bed linen and give it another life got us talking, so we grabbed our coat and facemask, and started chatting to people, discovering:

  • Hotel policy generally sets their bed sheets life cycle at 9 months

  • The linen is then thrown away - the quickest way to get rid of a problem

  • True to their nature and exacting clientele, luxury hotels purchase sheets with a high thread count

All meaning that every year high quality is discarded, often unused.

We met with some of the finest 5 star hotels and members clubs in London to discuss this. We’re delighted to say their interest in the project has led to partnerships providing Hermit with high quality and unspoilt bed linen that otherwise was destined for landfill.

Fabric saved. What next? Seeing the fabric pile up was rewarding, but equally alarming given we weren’t exactly sure how we would repurpose it. True to our founding beliefs, we felt strongly against creating excess waste. We wanted a simple design, a design to thriftily flaunt every single millimetre of our hard won fabric.

After many prototypes (...lockdown perks), we perfected a production method of making one set of pyjamas out of one double bed sheet. We like the balance of that. A fair trade. A virtuous cycle.

Furthermore, this simplicity in design also allows us to hand make every pyjama set in the UK with Ella adding pockets and various other detailing which keeps our emissions down too.

That brings us to today. We’re ready to go.

We have humble beginnings. We’ll take this slowly, but we’ll take it surely. To get things right we’ll produce our pyjamas in considered and fixed quantities, each with an individual and unique drop. Once they’re gone....

Drop #2. Coming Soon.
